Benefits of Learning Guitar as an Adult

It’s Never Too Late To Learn Guitar… Here’s 3 Big Reasons Why You Should

Have you always wanted to play guitar, but reaching adulthood dashed your chance to learn?  Good news… it’s never too late!  Neuroscientists and seasoned musicians alike overwhelmingly agree: learning guitar is an achievable task at any age… and packs a significant punch of benefits.  Here are just a few reasons you shouldn’t give up on those guitar dreams:

1. You’ll Give Your Brain A Workout

Science shows us that playing an instrument ignites a variety of areas in the brain connected to cognitive functions such as problem solving, creative thinking, memory, and planning. Just like any muscle, the more practice you give to playing this instrument, the stronger those functions can become.

This means that regular practice on a guitar (or any instrument), has the potential to positively affect your life and performance on tasks outside of the studio.

2. Your Overall Health Could Improve

While learning and regularly playing an instrument as an adult could delay the onset of cognitive declines like Alzheimer’s, cognitive function isn’t where the health benefits stop for practicing musicians.  In fact, there’s evidence that adults who play music have lower blood pressure, stronger immune systems, and decreased levels of stress and anxiety.

Learning to play also serves as an avenue to grow emotional intelligence, allowing an opportunity to tune in, recognize and respond to big feelings through expression.

3. It’s Fun!

In case you needed just one more reason to pick up that guitar, here’s the most important one: it’s a blast!  Playing music provides an outlet for creativity, let loose, and accomplish something just for you. Like any new hobby, learning the guitar opens up the door for you to explore new territory, meet new people, and jazz up your life (pun intended).

Being an adult learner can be intimidating, especially when it comes to picking up an instrument. However, overcoming the trepidation could be just the challenge you’ve been craving to level up your brain, your health, and quality of life.
